22nd Century Learning Framework

What should education prepare people for when intelligence is abundant, change is continuous, and the future cannot be reduced to workforce predictions?

The 22nd Century Learning Framework is a long-term research and foresight project exploring how education can prepare people not merely to adapt to the future, but to help shape a future in which humanity can flourish.

The purpose of education is to prepare people to advance human flourishing.

Why 22nd Century Learning?

The name is intentionally provocative. Education systems have spent decades preparing students for the “21st century” while remaining constrained by structures, assumptions, and measures inherited from the past.

Looking toward the 22nd century creates enough distance to ask more fundamental questions.

  • What capacities will remain distinctly valuable?

  • What should people understand, practice, and become?

  • What kind of society should education help make possible?

This is not an attempt to predict the world of 2100. It is an invitation to design education around purposes sustainable enough to matter beyond the next technological cycle.

A Framework in Development

This framework is not a finished model being presented as the answer. It is a long-term inquiry built through research, synthesis, dialogue, and continued revision.

The work draws from philosophy, human development, learning science, democratic theory, economics, public health, workforce research, technology, and educational practice. Across these disciplines, I am looking for recurring ideas, productive tensions, and evidence about what enables people and societies to flourish—and what education can reasonably be expected to contribute.

Current ideas remain working hypotheses. They will be tested against research, challenged by people with different expertise and lived experience, and refined as the world changes. The goal is not to predict a single future, but to develop a sustainable framework that can help researchers, policymakers, educational leaders, and practitioners make better decisions across many possible futures.

The framework will evolve. Its purpose must remain open to evidence, challenge, and better questions.
